Student Accommodation shows strong growth
Mar 26, 2019
Student accommodation projects continue to grow
An article by Donal Buckley in the Irish Independent confirmed that student accommodation is accounting for an increasing proportion of residential development activity.
According to the Construction Information Services (CIS) 6,060 bed-spaces were built across 22 projects between June 2016 and February 2019. Furthermore, planning permission was granted for an additional 2,309 spaces in Dublin and 810 in Cork in 2018, while plans have been submitted for 2,216 bed-spaces in the past four months.
The increasing prevalence of student housing is also evidenced by the fact that 21% of fast-track planning applications under the Strategic Housing Development (SHD) programme in the past fifteen months have been for student accommodation.
Marie Hunt of CBRE believes purpose built student accommodation schemes should be encouraged, as they could alleviate some strain on the general residential rental sector. Furthermore, these developments can be used as tourist accommodation during the Summer months.
