Two Businesses in Northern Ireland fined for asbestos offences
Following two recent prosecutions for asbestos-related offences, the Health and Safety Executive in Northern Ireland reported that in 2016 asbestos-related disease was recorded as the primary or secondary cause of death for 63 people in Northern Ireland.
A specialist asbestos surveying company was fined £7,500 for allowing two construction companies to conduct work prior to the results of their test being returned. It was reported that the company carried out a survey for asbestos in a retail premise, but allowed the two companies to proceed with work prior to the results being returned, which showed asbestos to be present.
The company pleaded guilty to a breach of the Health and Safety at Work (Northern Ireland) Order 1978 and the court imposed a fine of £7,500.
After the sentence was imposed, HSENI inspector Kyle Carrick said: “It is essential that asbestos surveys are always conducted in a structured, methodical and systematic manner so as to minimise the risk of exposure to asbestos from subsequent work activities”.
