Project Commencements up 10% in Q1 2019

Initial indicators are suggesting a 10% growth in projects commencing construction in Q1 2019 in comparison with Q1 2018, according to Construction Information Services (CIS). A total of 634 projects progressed on-site according to their online data-base.
In Q1, residential (including self-build) leads the way with 1,214 projects worth €7.5bn being updated on the CIS database. Some notable residential developments include a strategic housing application submitted by Bartra Capital Property Group for an €80m 222 bed ‘shared living space’ and 150 apartments in Cookstown Industrial Estate. Strategic planning developments have also been submitted by Glenveagh Properties for 133 houses and 120 apartments, and by Victoria Homes for 30 houses and 173 apartments.
Commercial and retail also demonstrated significant activity with 679 projects valued at €1.8bn updated in the database. The suburbs of Dublin are seeing substantial office development, with Sandyford and the surrounding areas witnessing six large-scale office developments totalling €300m over the previous 12 months. Meanwhile, a planning application for the €180m “Project Opera” commercial development in Limerick City is expected to be the largest inner-city commercial development outside of Dublin.
Other significant developments include plans submitted for a €14m primary care centre in Ennis, Co. Clare, and a €4m Food Innovation and Incubator Hub Campus in Athenry, Co. Galway.
