GARLAND's Brian Lahiff presents key BIM learnings at CitA BIM Gathering
Dec 12, 2019
GARLAND's Brian Lahiff presented some of our recent BIM learnings on an infrastructure project at the recent CitA BIM Gathering in Galway, Ireland on September 26th. Drawing on our recent work on the Bonded and Re-Export Zone at King Abdullah Port, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia project, Brian outlined the key learnings that GARLAND have taken from our implementation of BIM on this project.
The Bonded and Re-Export Zone was developed to encourage industry in the area through the creation of a development free from import/export taxes. Based on the internationally renowned Shannon Free Zone, the challenge was to apply these principles to a much larger scale project, a change which demanded a leaner approach to data and file processing - within tight programme turnarounds.
Key BIM Learnings:
- Use lean and structured data - at such scale it was crucial to use only key data where required
- There is always a better way - focus in on the issue, research and find out how other solutions can apply to your issue
- An educated client can influence - educated clients with deliverable requirements can help streamline processes
- Keep It Simple Stupid - know what tools to use when, just because you can add more data doesn't mean you should
- Pre BIM techniques still hold within BIM processes - many of the rules of thumb used to design and problem solve pre BIM still hold true so no need to abandon them.
