GARLAND House Celebrates its Centenary

Apr 18, 2023

GARLAND House celebrated it's 100-year Centenary on Thursday 13th April 2023. GARLAND's Anna Kalinina did a wonderful presentation on the history of the building which was originally designed by Architect Edwin Bradbury to serve as a Christian Science Church in March 1923.

Constructed by Messrs and Thompson Ltd, the original design achieved uninterrupted spans through the innovative use of RC concrete and steel trusses which was primarily used in commercial and residential warehouse buildings at the time. Designed in a pseudo-Lombardic style with Art Deco and Arts and Crafts references, the structure was a rare example of an Irish auditorium-type church. A decorative copper clad cupola at roof level adorned the Church and provided passive ventilation via metal grills and limestone inlets.

The Church was converted into a commercial office space in 1992.
